What vegan products should I use instead of egg, dairy, meat, and other animal products?

Use the conversion list on my substitutions page to learn what you can use in place of animal ingredients .

Remember a few tips:

*Read ingredients* to make sure you are buying vegan (meat and dairy free/egg free) products. Beware of animal bone char and animal derivatives. Also, some brands make both a vegan and non-vegan version, which could contain dairy, so read ingredients. Many products are gluten-free and may be labeled this way on the packaging, but read ingredients. Always avoid HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). FYI, the corn industry is trying to change this name, which would take some time if it gets approved. It’s their way to trick consumers.

 *Add Flaxseed* (finely ground) to salads, soups, pastas, even ice cream (soy or rice based, of course). My favorite dessert is Purely Decadent Vanilla Ice Cream with a teaspoon of Flaxseed and a teaspoon of salted sunflower seeds. Yum! Flaxseed is rich in Omega-3, 6 and 9 Fatty Acids and is a great source of Fiber. It also mixes great in shakes and smoothies. You can always use flax oil, but do not heat the oil as it gets a bitter taste. Instead, add to already prepared heated foods.

You can buy your vegan products at some chain grocery stores, or try Whole Foods for more specialty items, Trader Joes, or any other health food store. Always ask your store to carry a product. They will special order it for you. I do this every so often at Whole Foods.

Honeydew melon
handful of grapes (seedless)

Substitute with your favorite fruits (kiwi, bananas, raspberries, etc.)
Fruit is the best breakfast you can do for your body. It’s full of fiber, satisfying, low in calories, provides vitamins, and is rich in antioxidants and minerals. The body processes fruit quickly, so it is best to eat fruit alone and allow at least 30 minutes before consuming other foods. This can also be a healthy dessert recipe.

If you are serious about living a healthier lifestyle, then you will eliminate animal flesh and by-products, such as dairy (milk, cheese, butter, and eggs) from your diet. Although it is true that cancer treatments, especially aggressive treatments for cancers such as mesothelioma, can cause extreme fatigue, research is now showing that exercise can actually reduce the fatigue and increase energy, even in cancer patients.

The National Cancer Institute has begun focusing on various factors that can affect cancer survivorship, and one of the fastest growing focuses is in lifestyle choices and healthy habits. Even after a patient is determined to be cancer free, a cancer diagnosis can have a significant impact on life, and some patients react to this impact by choosing less healthy eating and exercise habits. What researchers have found, however, is that exercise can actually improve the emotional and functional well-being of patients, both during and after cancer treatment. One thought is that exercise increases muscle, which can better withstand the effects of cancer treatment. Exercise also releases serotonin, a mood-improving chemical that can give cancer patients an improved outlook on life and increase their survival rates simply by providing a more positive approach. Because it has such a high mortality rate, many mesothelioma doctors are now encouraging exercise intervention in patients undergoing treatment, and recommending that they continue the program after treatment, as research has indicated that fitness can be a tremendous tool in cancer treatment.

Cancer and the treatment for the disease can be devastating to the human body, and patients want to find any method they can to fight the nausea, pain and fatigue that often accompanies the disease treatment. Following a fitness routine during treatment, even if it is simply choosing the stairs over the elevator or parking further from the store to get extra walking in, may improve survival rates and provide some relief from treatment symptoms.

Exercising and Cancer:
It has long been known that diet and exercise can help reduce the risk of some types of cancers, yet many people are not aware that fitness is equally important for those who have been diagnosed with cancer. Cancer is a debilitating disease, and often the treatments to cure the disease cause equally debilitating side effects, including nausea and fatigue. For this reason, it is often difficult for anyone suffering from cancer, or caring for a loved one with the disease, to understand how a fitness routine may actually lessen the effects of cancer treatment and may even increase survival.

How Fitness Helps:
Exercise helps keep a body functioning at maximum performance level, and many researchers believe that cancer patients need their body operating at its fullest potential to help fight the disease. In fact, the National Cancer Institute recently conducted studies on patients with colon cancer and found that those that exercised regularly were less likely to have cancer return. In addition, the fitness program did not have to be strenuous, as the study showed that simply walking for six or more hours per week reduced patient’s chances of death from cancer by as much as 49%.

What about protein. How do I get enough?   

Protein comes from vegetables, beans, grains, nuts and seeds. Soybeans, quinoa and spinach are considered high quality protein sources.  There are many vegetarian meats (vegan) that taste great and supply a high amount of plant based protein. Gardein, Yves, Lightlife and Tofurky are some of the vegan brand names that make delicious meatless items for a healthy vegetarian recipe (vegan).

Quinoa 1/4 cup delivers 6 grams protein, Vegetarian Refried Beans 1/2 cup has 6 grams protein, many vegetarian meat sources (vegan) such as Smart Dog by Lightlife 1 dog (45 calories) contains 8 grams protein, Tofurky Brat 1 dog 27 grams protein, Yves Jumbo Dog 1 dog  (110 calories) 16 grams protein, Yves Meatless Lemon Herb Chicken Skewers 16 grams protein, Gardein Crispy Tenders 2 tenders (90 calories) 9 grams protein (you’ll probably want 4-6 tenders, which would deliver 18-27 grams protein) and Tofu 3 oz (50 calories) 5 grams protein.
